What I love about fishing is the quiet nature of the activity itself. I can really relax, slow down my mind and listen to all my senses. I also love it because it gives me a chance to observe the subtlety in the river stream, feel the direction and strength of the wind on my skin, the warmth produced by the sun and the little vibrations coming from the fishing rode. Those thousands of little details that I can feel with all my senses feed my intuition and guide my primal instinct through that hunt for some fresh wild fish.
What a great feeling!
I noticed that after fishing, I have this peaceful increase in my awareness that I can use to better communicate with others and, in fact, to become better at almost everything I do.
When you don’t make the effort of observing what all your senses are telling you about a situation, you miss out on a lot! Your subcontinent mind processes all those pieces of information and tries to communicate some conclusion to your conscious mind. But, most of the time, you are just ignoring it!
The world is full of obvious things which nobody by any chance ever observes. -Sherlock Holmes
Out of sheer laziness, you prefer to deduce a quick logical conclusion based on preconceived notions and on what people are telling you at the moment. This predisposed you to be very easily manipulated.
It’s like hypothesizing without first reading the data; then from that point forward, you start twisting the facts to fit your theory instead of building theories based on the facts.
During my experience in court with my ex-wife, I noticed that the Judge didn’t care so much about what we were saying, for he knew it was probably 90% bullshit anyway, but instead he analysed the facts about the sequences of the actions each parties had committed in the past.
It is way trickier and requires more resources to fake a series of actions than to simply lie.
Now I’m using this method because as far as I’m concerned, everybody’s full of shit!
You better look at what they did than listen to what they say!
What they are doing now, what words they use, their body language and other stuff like that to determine what is really going on. What is the truth!
Your girlfriend tells you that she loves you, but she frequently shows disrespect towards you?
Humm… this is incongruent!
I never disrespect the people I love!
What is the truth then?
She seems so convincing when she is talking to you. But why is she acting a different way just an hour later? Is she bipolar or something?
Those are legitimate questions.
You know, sometimes you can feel in your body the awkwardness of a situation; you can actually feel in your guts that something is wrong!
It’s like your body is getting ready for something.
When your subconscious mind knows that something is wrong, your primal instinct will prep your body for a quick escape or a fight. You can feel the blood flowing differently in certain areas of your body.
That’s what we call the guts feeling!
But, what I’m talking about, here in general, is also called mindfulness; it’s when your attention is really on what’s going on at the moment, and when you can even observe your own body, thoughts and feelings reacting to the events and all the details of what’s going on around you.
It is a very powerful state of mind and way of observing the world, as it is way more rich reliable point of reference.
This mindfulness is very easy to develop since you can do it in almost every situation. I love to do it in the gym! In this case, they call that the mind-body connection. You take the time to really feel what is going on in those targeted muscle groups and how your body reacts to those contractions. With experience, you can actually feel how and at which exact moment the muscle is properly activated for growth. Yeah, that’s one of the best kept secrets of pros!
At the office, in the bus, in the waiting room, anywhere, slow down your mind with the help of your breath, and in this kind of meditative state, start being aware and observe all the little details. Just notice the details in what you see and what you feel on your skin by focusing on all the little background noises, and realize what they mean.
It’s like if the word is talking to you. Why not listening to what it has to say?
It’s very easy, and it’s something that is worth experimenting with and developing further.
Always keep in mind that the truth of the story always lies in the details.
