We are often negligent to say but the reality is that money is important. Even if some scientific studies have proven that money is not what’s going to make you happy, it is pretty obvious for everyone that you need it and that the more you have, the better off you will be. Being “money-oriented” is not something that is wrong; in fact, it’s probably one of the best attitudes to have if you want to give what’s best to your family, and eventually become free to do what you really want in life.
The first idea that comes in mind is that more money means more income, but in this post I want to bring your attention to some potentially untapped or un-optimised but easy, relaxing and fun source of money that are readily available for you. The most important thing, however, is to have the mindset that comes with it.
First, keep a lean budget.
If you like having money, the first thing you should do is to stop wasting it. Take a look at your bank account and credit card statements, and analyse those numbers. See exactly from where the money is coming out of your pocket. Check if any new fees have been added to your costs by any of your candid service providers. Here are some things I personally did to trim the fat off my budget.
Eliminate car payment
Driving a new car is such a waste of money. The average car will drop around 1/6 of its value after the first year. I buy 5-year old cars coming out from a lease, and I still manage to get great deals on top quality automobiles. Because of that, I can afford a better quality car, and I can even get it for less than 1/3 of the price of a new one. By doing so, I also save on monthly issuance payments. Applying this sort of mentality will not only save you a shitload of money, but it will also pay for the expenses of your new car such as occasional crashes and other maintenance fees.
Take care of electricity, sucker
Most electric gadgets, such has microwaves, toaster ovens, televisions, sound systems, printers and computers on sleep mode and cell-phone adapters plugged in all around the house actually consume almost as much electricity during the hours they’re not in use as the number of times you’re actually using them. You can stop them from sucking the money out of your wallet by getting a bunch of cheap extension bars with a switch on them. Plug your stuff on them and turn the switch off when not in use.
Buy your meat in bulk from farmers
I have a deal with a farmer just in the outskirts of my city; it’s a 35-minutes drive from my place, I regularly buy from him under the table; half a beef and one full pork. Not only I have meat from animals that have previously been organic grass fed, but they also taste better and are a million times healthier to consume than the meat of those supermarket animals that are fed with corn, grain pellet, steroids and antibiotics. Not only you will save money by doing this but it will also save your health in the long run. Plus, a guy with half a cow in his freezer always sleeps better at night. There is nothing worse than running out of meat, and believe me my beloved reader when I say that the bacon that comes from a farmer’s pork is simply a dream come true.
Kill the damn cable TV bill
I’m actually shocked to see how many people are still paying for TV. If you have an internet access, then hook up your TV to your computer or home network and get all your music and movies, TV shows and documentaries with the help of Netflix, Hulu, Crackle or BitTorrent. Why would you pay ridiculous prices when you could have it all almost for free? For sports, just get an antenna for God’s sakes. Just make sure your current internet deal includes enough bandwidth to implement such changes. By the way, next time you call them, be prepared to change your provider, look at what deals are on the market and let them know that you are about to switch to their competitor’s service because the current rate sucks. Implementing this practice might yield incredible results because these internet providers do not want to lose customers. You might easily get a killer deal, just for you.
Switch to hobbies with benefits
It seems that anything you want to do in order to relax or have fun is draining you wallet, and it gets worse if the wife and kids are following your lead? That’s just because you’re trained by society to be a perfect consumer. Here are a couple of hobbies that can fill-up your free time with some promise of return.
I got the cheapest fishing rod on the market, some hooks and weights, and I’m using some beef liver, worm and Mac’n Cheese as bait. For a ridiculous price, I have been having so much good time fishing, relaxing and breathing fresh air on the side of the river this summer that it actually felt good and money well unspent. Seriously, it is a very enjoyable hobby because you actually learn a valuable skill by also bringing some fresh wild fish meat back home for dinner. Being a valuable source of protein and omega3, wild fish are delicious, healthy and fun to cook on the BBQ at the end of the day. Fish is also one of the best bodybuilding foods that you can find. Last time I went fishing, I brought back at least 50 USD worth of meat! Just make your homework and be sure that your new fishing spot is not a toxic dump.
Tomatoes are so easy to grow! They are full of anti-cancer nutrients such has lycopene, which is a powerful antioxidant that prevents damage to the body’s cells, not to mention its positive effects on your genetic makeup. Tomato nutrients resist cooking, and thus they can be kept frozen or in jars for a long time. Given that tomatoes are very versatile and delicious; growing them in real soil comes with a price. If you like tomatoes, you might actually be surprised by the price they cost you each year! I use a big chuck of my backyard to grow tomatoes. Last year, I have been able to give tomatoes to all my neighbours and family. We had been eating fresh tomatoes for about 2 month and make 140 big tomato jars for the winter.
American Ginseng growing
Apparently, a lot of people are ready to pay big bucks for quality naturally-grown ginseng, especially Asian. Take a look at your local Chinatown or look it up on eBay to see why it is also called the green gold. I’m growing a lot of it nearby my house in a woodland area. Nobody knows what it is, it looks like any random plant, and it grows slowly. You buy the seed on the internet; sprout them inside, plant hundreds of them in a hardwood forest nearby bigger trees in hope for a moist environment and wait 5 years. You can do the math by yourself, but I’m telling you that you can harvest for up to 20k USD on a 20000 square feet area of woodland. I don’t even know why some bother to grow illegal marijuana.
Breed Bengal, Savannah or other exotic cats
I always wanted to have one of those badass leopard kinds of cats patrolling around and inside my house. But have you seen how much those motherfuckers cost? Well, why not turn the situation around, get un-neutered male and female from different families on craigslist, look for uncertified ones for a better price, and let nature do the job. No need to get the baby’s certified when you’re about to sell them. You will still be able to get around 650 USD per kitten each time the female gives birth, which can happen 2 times a year. Cats are no trouble compared to dogs and are very discreet; just keep them healthy with quality foods, and it’s going to be a fun experience; plus they get rid of pest on your property!
Turn passion into profit
Are you into craft or art? Start your own site or use sites like Esty, Artfire, Supermarkethq that allow you to sell your creation instead of piling them up in your basement. There are buyers of countless tastes on the internet.
You must have developed special skills, for example playing guitar; it can be a very rewarding and fun experience to teach it. You can have one or two clients who just come to your place and have personalized guitar lessons with you for an hour once or twice a week.
Do you like doing projects, invent new gadgets and develop new solutions in your basement or garage during your free time? Well, get paid to do it! Take a look at Kickstarter and you will be amazed to see what kind of stupid projects are getting funded there. Why not your stupid project then?
If you’re obsessed and know everything about a specific subject, then write a book or an instruction manual about it, and sell it on amazon! Surely, writing a book is a lot of work, but we are talking about your passion here. Moreover, you never know what you could hit the jackpot with.
The easy-money mentality is about switching ours habits, thinking patterns, hobbies and passions from consumption to a production paradigm while being careful to keep a lean budget. Producing can be as fun as consuming and way more rewarding! Keep in mind: every problem has the potential to produce a solution!
For even more ideas to earn extra income besides your 9 to 5 job, I recommend you to read Nick Loper’s book The Side Hustle Path: 10 Proven Ways to Make Money Outside of Your Day Job (Volume 1), which is part of a nice series of 4 books. This is a great no nonsense book that will inspire you and give you a lot of great ideas if you decide to go down that path.
