Reading some articles on this website, you might find that some topics seem to go against one another. I do my best to keep a high level of consistency between all subjects, but the reality is that different situations need different beliefs.
Depending on which phase your life you’re in right now and what kind of challenge you need to face, you will use a certain belief system and a certain map of what reality is. We call these paradigms.
None of these paradigms are 100% true and, in case of almost all of them, one day you will eventually come to the conclusion that it was a wrong way of seeing things, and you will develop a more advanced belief system.
Those paradigms are like beliefs-vehicles that allow you to go from point A to point B without freaking out. When the vehicle doesn’t work the landscape anymore you have to change it to a new one.
A very common problem is that a lot a people stay stuck in old, ineffective and fruitless paradigms that prevent them to move forward in life. They are now in a new phase of their life and should be ready to move on, evolve, and achieve greatness, but they can’t. It is because their current beliefs-vehicle is just not suited for what’s happening.
Paradigms are self-justifying
In order to have at least the minimal amount of self-confidence you need to go through life, the model of reality that evolves in your mind always justifies its existence by constantly rationalizing. You will usually have a tendency to blind yourself to all the evidences that would prove your paradigm wrong, and be amazed by the wonder of everything that seems to prove that what you believe in is right.
A good example of that is the religious belief that the universe and all life on earth were created about 6000 years ago over period of 6 days. Even if mountains of rock hard scientific evidences prove that this belief is incorrect and, in fact, nothing more than religious folklore. Millions of people still believe that it is true, and when concrete evidences are presented to them, like dinosaur fossils and bones for example, they come out with reasons like: God put them there to test our faith!
They just can’t handle it! Their current paradigm doesn’t allow them!
The main reason for that is because your paradigm is conceived to make you operational in day-to-day life, and have some inherent defence mechanism against anything that could destroy your self-confidence or model of reality entirely.
Also, it requires having a certain level of maturity and humility to admit to yourself that your current way of thinking is just incorrect!
When a major flaw is exposed in your paradigm, it also means that you have to re-evaluate all that others believe!
You have to get a fix on a new workable reality ASAP. You cannot just go outside in the world and do what you have to do if you don’t understand how things work; you will only freak-out!
Moreover, most people define themselves by their ideologies and philosophies. Evolving to the next level means admitting to themselves that what “they are” is inappropriate, which is very difficult for most people!
This is a hard job, it is exhausting, and it requires willpower; it can also be frightening at times!
But most importantly, it simply cannot be done if you don’t have a new drivable beliefs-vehicle to replace the old one with.
That’s why, as long as you don’t have the necessary key to step in and start this new beliefs-vehicle, you will rationalize the necessary evidence to back-up the current one.
What do we need to evolve to the next vehicle?
Evolving to another beliefs-vehicle requires a few things. For starters, we obviously need open-mindedness to admit that there are better belief systems than the one we currently have to achieve our goals.
To be capable of such evolution, we will need some mental strength and self-control. If you do not yet have enough control to stop yourself from eating your favorite cookies all the time or to get rid of bad habits like biting your nail and whatnot, then guess what. You might not have the necessary self-control to change your entire belief system no matter how hard you want it.
Another thing is that we need to have a sharp mind that has no trouble learning and processing new, difficult and abstract concepts. For that reason, good nutrition, physical conditioning, proper amount of sleep and regular mind-challenging activities are a must.
Following the same train of thought, you should avoid anything that is bad for your brain health like alcohol, strong illegal drugs, exposure to constantly high levels of stress, poisonous chemicals, trash-food and things that we might be allergic to.
Having your brain work optimally will greatly facilitate what’s even most important…
Learn new stuff as frequently as you can!
Read lots of books and websites like this one, view documentaries before you go to sleep, and listen to audio-books while you are driving your car.
Hang out with smarter and older people than you, because they can serve as mentors who will help you evolve to new heights.
The more you learn, the more connections are made in your brain, and it is going to be easier to implement new paradigms.
Life is an evolution, so focus on anything that can help you learn and evolve.
It’s always a good practice to question yourself and the things you believe in! That’s the only way you’re going to be able to take full control over your evolution.
- Who are you now? And who do you want to be in the future?
- Where this beliefs-vehicle you’re now in is taking you?
- What kind of life experience do you want? And want kind of vehicle do you need to get you there?
- What are the beliefs that are holding you back?
- Where are the kind of opportunity you need for the next step? And does your current paradigm will allow you to see it?
Do not stay stuck in the same beliefs-vehicle because you’re too proud to admit that you were wrong or that your style is just getting old.
