You might have already heard that non-verbal communication is the most powerful form of communication. Some studies say that only 7% of the perceived communication is verbal while the remaining 93% come from your body language. Even if those numbers seem fairly exaggerated, I concur that body language is extremely powerful, and I believe in that for two main reasons.
First, it goes right through!
It is perceived, analysed and assimilated directly by the subconscious mind of your audience. What this means is that they will believe what they see and feel from your body language without any judgement. So no matter how much you are blabbing about how a great man you’re, as long as your body language sucks, nobody will ever believe you.
Second, it works both ways
Your body-language will in return influence your thinking pattern, your emotion and even your hormones. That’s right! A loser who starts moving physically like a winner will by that increase his testosterone, lower cortisol, start thinking, feeling and then acting like a winner.
You are a synergic system. Everything has an impact on everything. This gives you the wonderful opportunity to work out a successful self-improvement strategy from many different angles which, in turn, will allow you to have better and faster result.
One of the problems we have is that the education system in which we have been stuck in for about 15 years is conceived to shape us into good spineless suckers… I mean mindless consumers; I am deeply sorry pals… I really mean good citizens here … and that has left a lot of nasty habits that we may not even be aware of, e.g. bad body language.
Even worse, most guys these days don’t even seem to understand what the components of a powerful body language really are!
So here we are; you can use the following description to find out and fix some of your body language issues and display a powerful character.
How do you move around?
You move with relaxed, fluid movement and attitude … a little bit like a lion. Because you’re in control, you’re the king of the jungle, the badass cat in the bush; you’re not stressed at all, and you’re not in a hurry, everything goes as planned, so you can afford to preserve energy. Who knows when you might need to strike! Better be well rested! There might be a cute gazelle jumping around any-time soon, and thus you must be ready for the hunt!
So relax and be imperturbable anywhere you go. Make it feel like home! When someone requires your attention, take a pause, and then move your head slowly towards his direction, don’t be impatient to please his request.
Don’t raise your shoulder when you don’t know, don’t fidget with your fingers or tape with your feet or anything like that when you are waiting for someone or something! Those actions are communicating your anxiety without you ever being aware of it. This is bad, so be clear on that!
Make yourself feel and move like a lion! Always try to position yourself on a high spot in the king’s court when you’re in a group. Act like a cat would do, and find a comfortable spot in a central position, where you can actually enjoy the show.
How is your posture?
You just stand like a badass warrior! Head high, chest up, shoulder back and wide, abs tucked in! Stand tall and proud, and don’t be afraid of taking your rightful place among Kings! In fact, take as much place as you need!
It doesn’t mean you must feel like you have a 2 by 4 stick up in your ass because you stand tall, chest up and shoulder back. You must be relaxed and sharp at the same time! It’s all about finding the sweet spot between a relaxed and fluid movement and a strong stand-tall and chest-out kind of look… A good strength training routine will obviously help with maintaining your optimal posture.
Please keep your hand out of your pockets and don’t look down. Don’t cross your arms or hold something in front of you for that matter, such as a drink or a smartphone. These sub communicate fear.
When your arms, legs, chest and neck are wide open, these gestures create a sense of confidence portraying to the outside world that you’re in control of the situation; that you don’t feel threatened by anything, because that’s who you are and what you want!
When you sit, just lean back and rest! Install yourself very comfortably, and don’t cross your legs like a girl; if you don’t wear a skirt, you don’t need to do that.
How do you communicate?
You speak slowly, and don’t be in a hurry to tell them everything you know, you’re not their puppet to give any kind of information; you’re there to learn! Make them talk, ask questions, lay back and listen.
Just don’t get involved in gossip; you’re a man, so keep your mouth shut when it comes to that. When you speak, use a slightly higher volume than the average person in the group and a slow deep voice.
Keep a strong eye contact during verbal communication, and if you’re just going by someone without anything to say, then make sure to keep eye contact one second more than the other person. Also keep your eyelids relaxed at all times.
When you break eye contact, never look down. If you cannot look into the eye of the other person for some reason, look sideway but keep the same level and, for God’s sake, please stop smiling like Bozo the clown at everyone you meet; keep a serious face for both your acquaintances, and even in case of complete strangers.
Talking too much or too fast only sub-communicate a lack of confidence. You don’t have anything to prove and anyone to convince. If someone has to prove something, it is certainly them and not the other way around. If the deal doesn’t go as planned, there is absolutely no big deal; just keep your cool, because you always have other options anyway.
The key to a powerful body language is that your posture and movement must be relaxed and fluid. The reason for that is because being relaxed is a demonstration of control and confidence that signal power.
If you want to see a character with an awesome body language, look Marlon Brando up in the The Wild One (1953) on YouTube or on Torrent. Watch the bar scene with the girl. Pay attention to Marlon’s posture and body language, and you will see what I’m talking about!
Once all your body language issues and bad habits are fixed, you will feel and act like a real badass.
Enough with that one, I have obviously something more important to do …
