I’m used to speak about entrepreneurship, but in this article I’m going to speak about why you have to quit your job. Yes, that is right! Here are 5 good reasons why in this new century making a living from a job simply sucks, why it’s a poor life strategy and why you are simply better on your own.
Reason #1 – The middle class is vanishing
When I was still a kid, nearly everyone was part of the middle class, and it was rare to hear about somebody being unemployed. Sadly, things are changing… Since China entered the world trade organization in December 2011, the manufacturing base of the west is on the path of extinction and with the big party, the baby boomer’s have had, now it’s time for the next generations to pay the price. The fact is the west had once the greatest middle class in history, but now it is disappearing. Permanent jobs don’t exist anymore, full time jobs are replaced by part-time jobs and temporary jobs.
In the U.S the number one employer has now become Wal-Mart, and the number two is Kelly Services which is a temp agency. According to the U.S SSA, more than 40% of all employees make less than $20,000 a year. From now on a quarter of U.S employees are paid less than $10 per hour. In 1990, the debt to income ratio for the average North American household was around 60%. Today it is up to 155%.
With all these new information technologies, almost everything is being outsourced or automatized, and it’s only going to escalate further that way. For the remaining jobs temp staffing is becoming the new standard.
Your job is far from being safe like your father taught you it was supposed to be. Unless you’re one of the big cheeses, I suggest you my friend to get ready while you still can because things are shifting and time is running out.
Reason # 2 – The future is for economic hustlers
Probably, your parents, family and friends have advised you that the best strategy to earn a good living was to get a degree, get a job and save for retirement. Well, I’m pretty sure this would be a valid strategy if we were still in the 70’s but I don’t think it’s going to fly for the next few decades. The main problem is that strategy will simply make you economically stupid and dependent, which is the complete opposite of what you need to succeed in the upcoming era.
Most job don’t even exploit 30% of your capacity, they kill creativity, passion and prevent you from learning how to really earn money. You need to learn by doing, to control your income directly. You need not only to work hard but to work smart and most importantly learn how to produce something that has a real marketable value that you can sell.
Independence, abundance and unlimited growth will never come from a job. Only by building your own empire, by having many sources of income flow at once with which you can truly reach financial security and freedom. Working 40 hours a week in a grey cubicle while actually producing for 20 hours of work doesn’t guarantee you any future and only prevents you from creating real financial security for yourself.
Reason # 3 – Employers don’t care about you.
When you get hired by a corporation or any kind of business for that matter, they don’t have a career plan for you, and they don’t have any kind of future in mind for you either! In fact, they love the fact that you’re not too smart. Yes, smart enough to figure out that they pay you half the price your work is really worth on the market. Their goal is obviously nothing more than to put the maximum amount of money they can in their own pockets, which consequently means putting less in yours.
Even if you work your ass off for years, even if you sell your soul for your job,
you are nothing more than a disposable asset for them and as soon as they find a way to cut or outsource your job, be sure of one thing: they will.
They don’t care if you just bought a new house, if your wife is pregnant or if you have 3 kids to feed, they don’t care at all! The only thing they care about is to maximise their shareholder value in order for their investors to profit … from you.
Even if you work twice as hard and you educate yourself twice as much to sharpen your skills, it will not pay off in a cubicle! Your main aspiration becomes securing your job so that you can close the week with a pay-check in your pocket. However, the truth is that playing the office social game is not really a good long term investment simply because all your efforts are going to become totally worthless the day they fire you anyway.
Reason # 4 – A job will never satisfy your needs
I know that a job can fulfil your basic physiological needs like food, shelter, transport and clothing, but is that all what you need? If only I could add safety, protection and stability to that list, but again I would be deceitful…
Will you get fulfilment by working a series of dead-end jobs until the end of your life? What about achievement, mastery, independence, prestige, meaning, passion and personal growth? What about waking up in the morning with fire up your ass because you love what you do?
Working in an office will simply make you a walking dead. We all know in our hearts that the salary itself earned by doing a job won’t make us happy. It is possible to have lifestyles that satisfy more of your needs. You don’t have to get your creativity crushed, living like a slave, writing memos, going to meetings, hanging on that soulless management bullshit and working for a bunch of socio-paths.
Let’s be realistic guys: working for them is so dull and tedious that it actually equals selling your soul! All that for what? A pay-check to pay-check life and a bag of peanuts for retirements?
I’m telling you that this is a get poor and depressed scheme.
Reason # 5 – You don’t have to make the jump, you can take small steps.
While reading these articles you’re probably thinking: “yes, I can see this makes a lot of sense, but I can’t just quit.” I have a house, I have a car, I have a wife, I have kids and I have bills to pay. Of course, I’m not talking about quitting your job today, even though I’m sure it would be a moment of intense pleasure.
You have to research and experiment first! The best way is to start part-time! In fact, you may go ahead and use some “company time” to help you get started.
Don’t tell me you can’t find 3 hours a day!
3 hours a day at 100% production capacity, 6 days a week gives you 72 hours a month of real productive work. I’m sure that at that pace you can get something great going within 4 months. You can continue like that as long as it doesn’t bring money, and then do a progressive transition.
At first you keep your job and you take more from your own free time, and at one point you switch to a part-time job. It can take 3 or 4 years to be 100% self-sustainable, but there is no rush! The plan is in motion and it can be done safely. You can do it without putting your family and assets in jeopardy.
Even if you still need to have a full or part time job, having more than one
source of income will give you greater financial safety, and it is also the foundation of wealth.
Putting your extra time in the creation of a side business with the goal of growing it instead of wasting your time hanging around or doing job overtime for free can be greatly fulfilling, and it will end up giving you great benefits if you don’t give up.
Yes, doing this will necessitate time and sweat, but it will contribute to making you smarter, stronger and give your life a purpose. You can create your own business, your own lifestyle, you can work for yourself, and I believe it’s a way superior strategy than investing yourself in a job that does not appreciate you at all.
